Chaplain Resident

Job Description

As an integrated team member, the chaplain resident is responsible for providing spiritual, emotional, and religious support to patients, families, and staff. The chaplain resident will participate in all activities and group work of the Clinical Pastoral Education Program, complete all required readings and written work, provide spiritual care to patients on assigned units or by referral through Chaplaincy Services, and provide overnight and weekend on-call coverage in rotation with other residents. The chaplain must work as a professional, interact as part of the interdisciplinary care team and chart in the patient’s computer and paper medical record as appropriate.

Essential Functions

· Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.

· Applies learning in the Clinical Pastoral Education Program in order to make judgments concerning the spiritual/emotional needs of persons and decisions about how the chaplain resident can assist those persons either directly or indirectly.

· Communicate in the context of the other person’s frame of reference and language skills.

Relate comfortably and supportively with patients and their families, physicians, hospital employees and all levels of management

· Provide Crisis intervention: Respond to emergencies such as Code Blue alerts to provide immediate spiritual and emotional support to patients and families.

· Provides regular chaplaincy coverage to assigned patient areas. Attends to verbal and non-verbal communication, Assesses Interprets patient and family spiritual and emotional needs. Responds to discovered assessed needs in an appropriate age specific and patient population specific manner. Works non-judgmentally in an unbiased manner with diverse persons from all backgrounds.

· Leads religious rituals/services as appropriate with approval of supervisor.

· Engages in CPE learning in compliance with ACPE standards.

· Ability to tolerate, develop skills, engage with and navigate spiritual care provision with emotional stamina and coping skills for dealing with potentially traumatic situations.

Competencies

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to communicate effectively and with empathy. Able to establish and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships. Able to provide some degree of grief support to culturally diverse population. Comfortable navigating a large patient population with diverse spiritual, religious, and emotional needs.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in Divinity or related field preferred.

AND

Experience:

Experience working with people of multiple faiths and cultures strongly preferred.
